David and Carol Martin from the Southern Scottish town of Hawick won £33 million in the National Lottery. The couple came forward after discovering that the ticket they had bought in their local Morrisons supermarket had matched the numbers drawn in the record UK Lotto draw: 26, 27, 46, 47, 52 and 58.
In a statement following the draw on Saturday 9 January, the UK National Lottery said that “A couple from the Scottish Borders are celebrating after winning one half of the incredible £66 million Lotto jackpot. The husband-and-wife team are celebrating with a life-changing cheque for £33,035,323.”
They Had No Idea that They Had Won the Lotto
David, who fits equipment in the homes of the elderly and disabled, had completely forgotten that he had tickets for the Lotto. In fact, the winning ticket was just sitting patiently on the couple’s mantelpiece. Then a visiting friend noticed the ticket and it was he who suggested they check out if the numbers were a match. “My mate Keith had popped over for a chat,” David said to the gathered British press. “He mentioned that there had been two Lotto winners in the big rollover.”
The Breakfast of Champions: Hot Tea, Black Pudding, Bacon & £33 Million
After Keith had left, Carol and David were tucking into bacon and black pudding rolls when they decided to check the ticket against the results. “I had three lines,” David recalls. “They were all Lucky Dip tickets, and as Carol called out the numbers, I realised that the first line matched up one by one. We must have checked it another ten times or more.”
The news struck them like lightning on a sunny day, said David. “It was a just total shock. We kept re-checking the numbers as we thought there must be a mistake. Then we called Camelot to see if it could possibly be true. The lady at the end of the phone was really nice and told us we were right, we were winners. All we could do was drink lots of hot tea and try and make sense of it all. The information just wasn’t going in.”
“We’re going to Help Friends & Family Who’ve Been Hit by the Flooding”
The happy couple haven’t been back to work since hearing they had become overnight millionaires. Initially they called in sick, but since coming out in the British media, their employers are aware of their unique circumstances. The Martins now intend to take an early retirement and buy a new country home, a holiday home in the sun, and, as Carol said, “we would like to help our closest friends and family. Parts of our community have also been hit by flooding and we know lots of people who have struggled in recent times, so there’s a lot for us to work out but it’s a nice problem to have.”
The very first thing the two 54-year-olds did, however, was buy a first-class plane ticket from Australia to Scotland for their daughter, who’s currently holidaying Down Under.
David & Carol Martin: the Biggest UK Lotto Prize Winners Ever
With their new-found wealth, the couple have catapulted to the top position on the list of all-time biggest wins in the UK Lotto, ahead of 1995 winners Paul Maddison and Mark Gardiner, who shared a £22.5 million lottery prize.
Follow in the footsteps of the increasingly wealthy UK Lotto winners this week as the jackpot in the National Lottery’s flagship game has risen to a desirable £9.9 million.
